HELLO!
I appreciate you stopping by and checking out my Traveling Beads Collection!
Born and raised on Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota, I have been creating things with my hands for as long as I can remember. I have had no formal training and am self-taught in every technique I use.

I decided to turn my passion for jewelry-making into a business in 2012.
I was teaching jewelry making at the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Northland and was encouraged by my members to start selling my jewelry. Before that time I was choosing to make my own jewelry that fit my own personal style better than anything I could find at major retailers.
I chose the name Traveling Beads because I have collected a variety of beautiful, precious minerals, beads, and stones on my travels across the United States and as well as Peru in South America.
I am inspired by physical nature and earthy tones. All of my work is developed from influences by traditional to contemporary, eclectic to trendy and a variety of techniques. All pieces are beautifully handcrafted with quality craftmanship and special attention to detail. I take great pride in the quality and uniqueness of my work. I will rarely ever make a piece of jewelry that I would not choose to wear myself.
I truly hope you find a piece from my collection that speaks to you and can fit perfectly into your life.
When I am not being creative, you'll likely find me playing games or singing silly songs to my son Benjamin and partner Bryce, or going to CrossFit at CrossFit Duluth.

My day job/heart's work is in social justice, public education and advocacy with survivors of violence.

Peace & Love,
Mel Alvar
